Why is Asbestos a Problem?

Asbestos is a natural material that has a number of useful properties, including being water-resistant and – under most circumstances – fireproof, requiring temperatures of over 400ºC to melt. This made it a popular choice for construction companies, in and around Birmingham, seeking to build safer homes, through its use in floor and ceiling tiles, as well as by those seeking to make houses more economical, as seen in its use as pipe lagging to prevent unnecessary heat loss.

However, asbestos is a fibrous material, meaning it flakes and splits into hair-like strands when it is manipulated or damaged. These strands, which are actually crystalline, then get breathed in by whoever is nearby, and their sharp edges damage the delicate inner lining of the lungs and airways. Long-term exposure causes no immediate symptoms, but rather issues creep up over decades, often leading to respiratory problems such as asbestosis, mesothelioma and lung cancer.

As all modern construction – anything built after the year 2000, and most built in the decade prior – is banned from using any form of material containing asbestos, the majority of new buildings in and around Birmingham do not pose a risk to inhabitants or workers.
